Discrimination Complaint

As a manager or supervisor, you are responsible for meeting the operational requirements of your department, supervising people, and implementing the many complex policies and procedures of the University, which at times may seem overwhelming. You may be called upon to address issues of perceived discrimination or harassment in the workplace by your employees. You, as an individual, may also be accused of discrimination or harassment by one or more of your employees, clients, students or by other individuals conducting business with the university. What do you do?

Staff Diversity & AA/EEO Compliance Office

The Staff Diversity & AA/EEO Compliance Office has the responsibility of investigating and resolving complaints of discrimination filed by staff employees or by applicants seeking employment at UCLA. The office is also a resource to managers and supervisors for issues involving employment discrimination and harassment.

When a Complaint is Filed:

The Staff Diversity & AA/EEO Compliance Office will investigate the complaint of your employee(s) and the findings will be reported to appropriate parties. If you are accused of discrimination or harassment, the office will assist you by advising you of your legal rights, walking you through the complaint procedure, providing you with a copy of the allegations for your response, giving you an opportunity to identify witnesses to support your position, keeping you informed of the progress of the investigation, and advising you of the outcome of the investigation.

The Staff Diversity & AA/EEO Compliance Office will make every effort to ensure fair and equal treatment of all involved parties during the complaint process. All attempts will be made to keep the matter as confidential as possible, within the confines of the law.

The Staff Diversity & AA/EEO Office will also:

  • Clarify the University Nondiscrimination in Employment Policy and procedures and how they affect you and your employees
  • Advise you of the University's confidentiality practices
  • Explore and find options to assist you and your employee(s)
  • Refer you or your employee(s) to other UCLA offices for additional support or services when appropriate

The Staff Diversity & AA/EEO Office does not:

The Staff Diversity & AA/EEO Compliance Office does not make decisions on any disciplinary actions to be taken with regard to any person or issue. Any actions taken as a result of office's investigations are decided by department management or other appropriate University officials.
