Overview of Leaves of Absence & Time Off

A leave of absence is continuous or intermittent time away from work, taken at various points in an employee’s University career for reasons such as an employee’s own medical condition, pregnancy disability, the medical needs of a family member, military service, parental bonding, or personal matters, and may be paid or unpaid. A leave of absence provides eligible employees with approved time away from work for qualifying personal, family, medical, military, or other reasons, with available leave options, eligibility requirements, and pay status determined by University policy and, where applicable, collective bargaining agreements. See below for details on various leave programs.

For detailed information about leave eligibility, requesting a leave, and available leave programs, refer to the UCnet: Taking a Leave of Absence. Employees represented by a union should also review the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement for provisions specific to their bargaining unit.
