The University of California, Retirement System, UCRS, offers a defined benefit plan, in some cases a defined contribution plan, and Retirement Savings Plans. These programs and counseling services with help you plan for a secure and rewarding retirement.

University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP)
The University of California, Retirement Plan, UCRP, is automatic to employees who are appointed to work at least 50% effort for 12-months or longer duration who are not in an excluded appointment and/or appointment type, or those employees who worked 1,000-hours (750-hours for Unit 18 Lecturers) in a rolling 12-month calendar.
Retirement Savings Plans (RSvP)
The University of California offers a variety of Retirement Savings Plans (RSvP) that allows employees to save for their retirement. Including the 403(b) Plan, 457(b) Plan and Defined Contribution Plan as optional plans in addition to your primary plan to save additional money to have the standard of living you want in retirement.
UCRP Tiers are determined by the employee’s UCRP entry date and any break-in-service if applicable. The UCRP Tiers are:
- 1976 Tier with Social Security
UCRP entry before 7/1/2013* - 1976 Tier without Social Security
UCRP entry before 7/1/2013* who did not elect Social Security during the 4/1/1976 election - UCRP Safety Members
UCRP entry before 7/1/1976 and later - UCRP Tier Two Members
UCRP entry date before 7/1/1990 - 2013 Tier (Regular and Modified)
UCRP entry date between 7/1/2013 and 6/30/2016* - 2016 Tier Pension Plan or Matching Plan
UCRP entry date 7/1/2016 and later
*A tier break will occur if a member separates then rehires in a new Tier period after the last day of the month following the separation month.
CAP Capital Accumulations Provision.
A special provision established by the UC Regents when the state of California was having budget crisis. CAP affects UCRP members from 1992-1994 and 2002-2003.
UC Retiree Health Benefits are determined by the employee’s UCRP entry date and any breaks-in-service if applicable. A UC retiree could be eligible for UC Retiree Health Benefits if the employee:
- Retires within 120-days of separation,
- Elects the monthly pension benefit (1976-Tier),
- Is “Full Benefits” at the time of separation,
- And has a minimum of 10-UCRP service credit years, including sick hours.
