One of the biggest challenges that managers face is having constructive conversations with their team members regarding salary and compensation. This course provides an overview of the UC policies and UCLA Local Procedures, processes, and underlying compensation practices that guide compensation decision-making and salary administration at UCLA. The course is designed for and limited to individuals who are in managerial or supervisory roles who have decision-making or recommending roles in the setting of hiring salaries, determining merit and equity adjustments, and recommending positions for reclassification.

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the components and purposes of the elements of total rewards at UCLA and demonstrate the value of each of the total rewards elements using a Total Compensation calculator.
  • Describe the key steps in the creation of a compensation structure and how these processes are implemented in the UC system.
  • Define the major components of compensation, the limitations on the components of compensation along with the reasons for the limitations, and the UC policies and UCLA Local Procedures for approval of salary actions at UCLA.
  • Define the key individual salary actions -- hiring salary setting, equity, promotion, reclassification, administrative stipend, merit, and recognition awards, e.g., SPOT and STAR – and understand the appropriate uses of each of these managerial tools in the process of workforce administration.
  • Describe the key Federal and State laws that dictate the fair and equitable salary administration processes at UCLA.

UCLA Staff and Faculty who currently supervise others are eligible to enroll in this class. The class is also open to UCLA staff and faculty managers in roles with payroll titles classified at the following levels (including equivalent IT and academic classifications):

Roles currently classified under the Career Tracks system:

  • MGR1 through MGR4
  • Professional 4 and 5

Roles still classified under the pre-Career Tracks system:

  • MSP – all levels
  • PSS-5 through PSS-7

This course counts as an elective course toward the Management Development Certificate and as a required course toward the Supervisory HR Principles Certificate. It may also be taken individually without pursuing a certificate.
