This workshop navigates through the confusing worlds of workplace injuries and disability management. It provides UCLA supervisors with an overview of workers’ compensation and the supervisor’s role in the process. Following this overview, the program concentrates on understanding an employer’s obligation to accommodate employees (faculty and staff) with functional limitations due to a medical condition, disability, injury and/or illness and how to manage accommodations including leaves. We will review the complexities that supervisors of faculty and staff face in managing current and prospective disabled employees and the potential wide-ranging effects that decisions and actions have on legal compliance as well as on the work life of the employee. This course presents a common-sense approach to managing employees with disabilities while fulfilling our responsibilities under the law, UC policies, and collective bargaining agreements.

Course topics include:

  • Workers’ compensation process
  • Workers’ compensation costs and funding
  • Disability defined
  • What is reasonable accommodation
