This intensive, three-day workshop provides an overview of supervision and the skills needed to successfully lead and manage work groups. The workshop takes place over three weeks.

The first session is on the “start date” which appears here in the UC Learning Center, the second session is one week later, and the third session is on the “end date” shown here in the system. The schedule for all three sessions is 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This highly-interactive training focuses on the human relations skills of supervision, and participants engage in skill building through a variety of exercises and simulations. The following topics are covered:

  • Leadership: Styles of supervisory leadership are explored, along with a discussion of appropriate applications.
  • Understanding Group Conflict: Participants will learn about and experience the dynamics of inter-group conflict through various fun and engaging exercises. Sources of conflict are explored and methods of resolving conflict are discussed. A self-assessment of personal style is provided.
  • Communication and Active Listening: The process of communication is discussed and problem areas are identified. Techniques for improving communication are covered, including a demonstration of “active listening” followed by practice of this valuable communication skill.
  • Group Problem Solving: Problem solving strategies and group dynamics are explored through an exercise in which the “rational” and “interpersonal” skills of group problem solving are highlighted along with the basic principles of group dynamics.
  • Implementing Change: Strategies for implementing change are examined through group exercise and discussion. Guidelines are provided for planning the change process and dealing productively with employee resistance.
  • Planning, Goal Setting, and Delegation are also covered.

The price for the course can be found in the “Schedule and Pricing” section for each of the three individual sessions – please be aware that price shown in each session’s “Schedule and Pricing” information is actually the price for all three sessions combined. (For example, if session 1 shows a price of $230, then $230 is actually the price for the whole course which includes all three sessions.)

Staff and faculty supervisors and managers at all levels are eligible to enroll. All staff and faculty who do not yet supervise others but aspire to supervisory positions are also eligible to enroll.

This course counts as a required course toward the Supervisory Leadership Principles Certificate. It may also be taken individually without pursuing the certificate.
