UCLA Workplace Violence Prevention Plan

At UCLA, we are dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive work environment for all of our faculty, staff, and students. In alignment with this commitment, the university has launched the Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP). The plan is based on the recommendations of a cross-functional team from Employee & Labor Relations; Environment, Health & Safety; Emergency Management; Insurance & Risk Management; Campus Counsel; and Audit & Advisory Services.

The WVPP is being introduced in coordination with the University of California's systemwide Workplace Violence Prevention in General Industry Center of Excellence (WPVPGI CoE). The UCLA plan specifically addresses hazards associated with four types of workplace violence as defined by the Labor Code (LC) section 6401.9.

Per LC 6401.9, workplace violence is defined as any act of violence or threat of violence that occurs in a place of employment. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • The threat or use of physical force against an employee that results in, or has the high likelihood of resulting in, injury, psychological trauma, or stress, regardless of whether the employee sustains an injury.
  • An incident involving a threat or use of a firearm or other dangerous weapon, including the use of common objects as weapons, regardless of whether the employee sustains an injury.
  • The four types of workplace violence defined in LC 6401.9.

Per LC 6401.9, a threat of violence is any verbal or written statement, including, but not limited to, texts, electronic messages, social media messages, or other online posts, or any behavioral or physical conduct, that conveys an intent or that is reasonably perceived to convey an intent, to cause physical harm or to place someone in fear of physical harm, and that serves no legitimate purpose.

The WVPP depends on every employee's active participation in reporting workplace violence incidents. To report a Workplace Violence Incident, use the UC Workplace Violence Online Reporting Tool which can be found at Bruins Safe Online (BSO).

In the event of actual or imminent workplace violence, call 911 immediately.
