Employee-initiated Reduction In Time (ERIT) Program

This is a friendly reminder that departments have the option to implement the Employee-initiated Reduction In Time (ERIT) Program to generate cost savings resulting from voluntary reductions in time.

The popularity of ERIT has grown since its initial implementation, as it provides employees an option to seek work-life balance and results in savings to departments that participate. Since its implementation in 2011, the estimated savings for UCLA has reached $11 million. The ERIT Program is currently scheduled to lapse on June 30, 2020 although the UC Office of the President could decide to extend it beyond that date.

Upon approval, ERIT allows eligible career staff, except Senior Management Group members, to voluntarily reduce their current appointment percentage and corresponding pay. In exchange, employees receive certain specified advantages, such as accrual of vacation and sick leave at the employees’ pre-ERIT accrual rates.

For departments that choose to participate in ERIT, an employee may request the department head's approval to voluntarily reduce working time, within specific limits, from a minimum of one month to a maximum of 36 months. Exclusively represented employees are eligible for ERIT if their applicable union has agreed to participate in the program.

The following documents are designed to help with the implementation of the program:
