UCLA Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Launched

Key takeaways:

At UCLA, we are dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive and supportive work environment for all of our faculty, staff and students. In alignment with this commitment, we have recently launched UCLA’s Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP) and updated UCLA Policy 132: Workplace Violence Prevention based on the recommendations of a cross-functional campus team that included members of Employee & Labor Relations; Environment, Health & Safety; Emergency Management; Insurance & Risk Management; Campus Counsel; and Audit & Advisory Services.

The WVPP is being introduced in coordination with the University of California's systemwide Workplace Violence Prevention in General Industry Center of Excellence and in compliance with California State Bill No. 553, which was signed into law by Governor Newsom last fall and adds Section 6401.9 to the California Labor Code.

The new law went into effect on July 1, 2024, and applies to all UC locations, with specific exceptions:

  • UC Health facilities and employees already covered by California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 3342
  • Law enforcement agencies defined under California Code of Regulations
  • Employees working remotely from locations outside UC’s control

UCLA Violence Prevention Resources

Annual training will be provided to help employees recognize, prevent and report workplace violence, along with resources and tools designed to address and reduce such incidents. All campus employees on active payroll status are required to complete Workplace Violence Prevention training within 30 calendar days of assignment. An email notification containing details regarding accessing this assigned training through the UC Learning Center will be sent to all assigned employees by the end of this week.

The Behavioral Intervention Team can provide additional training for departments, upon request. To inquire about training on Workplace Violence Prevention or for any other questions, contact the UCLA WVPP program administrator at UCLABIT@chr.ucla.edu.

The WVPP depends on every employee’s active participation in reporting workplace violence incidents. To report an incident, use the Bruins Safe Online reporting tool. For your convenience, a Workplace Violence Prevention Reference Guide has been developed to guide you step-by-step through the process of reporting an incident.

The introduction of this plan is part of our ongoing effort to encourage and ensure a safe and supportive work environment for all community members. We strongly encourage you to use the resources in the plan and adhere to the new protocols to foster a secure and respectful workplace.

Should you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the UCLA WVPP program administrator at UCLABIT@chr.ucla.edu. Together, we can uphold our commitment to safety and inclusivity at UCLA.
